f-cell 2020: Hybrid event format a success
More than 650 online and onsite participants – Fraunhofer ISE and Ionomr Innovations win the f-cell award
Representatives of the hydrogen and fuel cell industry from around the world met at the f-cell trade event for two days in late September. Some attended in person at the Haus der Wirtschaft in Stuttgart while others attended virtually from all corners of the globe. Fraunhofer ISE and Ionomr Innovations were presented with the f-cell award by Baden-Württemberg’s Environment Minister, Franz Untersteller MdL. The 24-hour Hydrogen Challenge was also held during the event and was won by the “Dedicated Fuel Cell Drivers” team who logged an impressive 1,894 kilometers.
“The event was a success,” says Peter Sauber, the organizer of f-cell, in summing up this year’s conference. Due to the corona virus and government restrictions, the organizers decided to implement a hybrid event format. Participants were able to attend the event in person at the Haus der Wirtschaft in Stuttgart or virtually from their home or office. “Thanks to our interactive digital event platform, we managed to attract many last-minute, international attendees. They had the same opportunities to participate as those who were onsite,” adds Peter Sauber. Over 650 people signed up for the two-day event on September29th and 30th. The keynotes, sessions and trade show discussions mainly dealt with the topics of technical innovations and various government hydrogen strategies “This was our first time exhibiting at f-cell and it was a complete success! The format and implementation of the event were excellent given the situation. Our concerns about corona were unfounded. We were able to have many highquality technical discussions,” says Werner Volk, Project Engineering Director, OPTIMA life science GmbH.
Fraunhofer ISE and Ionomr Innovations win the f-cell award
In addition to the opportunity to exchange ideas and network with representatives from research, government and industry sectors, the f-cell award presentation was one of the event’s highlights. This annual award honors innovations and products that help shape and promote the hydrogen and fuel cell industry. In the “Research & Development” category, Freiburg’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE) received the award for its submission “Through-Plane Ionomer Gradients in Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers for Enhanced Power Density”. Ionomr Innovations Inc. won over the jury for the f-cell award in the category “Products & Markets”, with their “Pemion™ Hydrocarbon Proton Exchange Membranes and Ionomers for Fuel Cell Applications”. The award was presented by the Environment Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Franz Untersteller MdL. His Ministry and the Stuttgart Region Economic Development Corporation have supported the f-cell award for many years.
Three countries in 24 hours
f-cell also hosted the 24-hour Hydrogen Challenge: at 4 p.m. on September 28th at the Bodenseeforum in Konstanz, 17 teams embarked upon their journey through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Their final destination was the historic Wagenhallen Stuttgart. The “Dedicated Fuel Cell Drivers” team prevailed against the competition and racked up a distance of 1,894 kilometers. In second and third place were the teams “Continue with Hydrogen” (“Weiter mit Wasserstoff”) and “ConFueled Cell Drivers” . The next and 21st edition of f-cell will take place again in Stuttgart on September 14+15, 2021.
f-cell on social media
Founded in 2001, f-cell is one of the oldest international trade events for the hydrogen and fuel cell industry, as well as one of the most important in the world. It provides a comprehensive overview of relevant international markets and technological advances. Here, participants will make contacts and meet decision-makers. The interactive format offers an ideal platform for experts and newcomers to establish, discuss and build sustainable business relationships. The f-cell award honors innovative hydrogen and fuel cell projects and technologies and is supported by the Ministry for the Environment, Climate and the Energy Sector Baden-Württemberg and the Stuttgart Region Economic Development Corporation (Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH, WRS). f-cell consists of a conference, interactive workshops, an evening event with award ceremony and an international trade fair. It will be held in Stuttgart on September 29 and 30, 2020.
